FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT AGES WILL BENEFIT FROM HUSH BUDDY?
We recommend Hush Buddy for children 2 to 4+, when they are capable of understanding the cause and effect their choices will have on Whisper, and their imagination is developed to help them bond with their new buddy.
CAN I USE WHISPER IF I HAVE A WHITE NOISE MACHINE?
WILL MY CHILD WANT TO PLAY WITH WHISPER, THE HUSH BUDDY?
Sleep experts advised us to keep Whisper’s design simple and, frankly, rather plain looking, since anything too glitzy would tempt a child to play rather than sleep.
After all, Whisper is a tool, not a toy. So effectiveness is job #1.
Still, some parents have told us, at the beginning, some children may intentionally test the dimming feature a bit until the novelty wears off.
MY CHILD COMES INTO OUR ROOM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT THAT?
Focus on the BEGINNING of the night. At bedtime your child has a mental “inventory” of what’s needed for them to comfortably go to sleep. This may include a stuffed animal, white noise machine, a blanket, and in many cases YOU as the parent. When they wake in the middle of the night, if you are no longer there, they don’t have their complete inventory, and they go looking for you. Whisper is designed to help you gracefully exit their room and thus, are no longer part of their inventory. Once your child learns to go to sleep on their own on a regular basis, there’s no reason for them to come to your room. Another method might be to start a reward calendar system that provides a reward for staying in their own bed all night. Be sure it’s a reward that can be given first thing in the morning, since toddlers aren’t famous for patience. Ideas include their favorite breakfast, or some stickers
WHAT IF MY CHILD REFUSES TO STAY IN THEIR ROOM WITH THE HUSH BUDDY AT BEDTIME?
While the Hush Buddy isn’t designed to modify that particular behavior, here’s a strategy that has been a proven winner: Lead your child back to their bed, and tuck them in. Don’t lay down with them. Tell your child “Because you left your room, I need to close your door for one minute”. Then do so. With each occurrence, add another minute, up to a total of five minutes.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS SICK OR REALLY NEEDS ME AT NIGHT? HOW CAN I LET MY CHILD KNOW IT’S OKAY TO CRY OUT FOR ME THEN?
You know better than anyone how well your child will comply with (or abuse) exceptions. You probably already have an unspoken system in place with your child for these circumstances, so just remind them of times in the past when they showed good judgement. Then simply let them know Whisper the Hush Buddy will be okay with them finding you or calling out for you under those special circumstances.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS TERRIFIED OF THE DARK?
Hush Buddy only dims to about half brightness briefly. It doesn’t go completely dark. But if your child has an actual phobia of dark rooms, Hush Buddy may not be for you.
HOW LONG WILL HUSH BUDDY BE EFFECTIVE FOR MY CHILD?
Hush Buddy is powered by your child’s imagination and personal bond with Whisper. There will come a day when Whisper, Santa, and the Tooth Fairy all assume a place of nostalgia for your child. At that time, Hush Buddy will simply become a cherished nightlight
CAN I TURN THE HUSH BUDDY OFF DURING THE DAY?
HOW LONG WILL THE LIGHT LAST?
The LEDs have a general life expectancy of 50,000 hours.
CAN I USE HUSH BUDDY IN A ROOM WITH MORE THAN ONE CHILD?
Certainly, but keep the recommended ages of 2 to 4 in mind. If an older sibling fails to buy in to the story of Whisper, they could spoil the magic for the younger child.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD WE READ THE STORY ABOUT WHISPER?
We recommend nightly for the first week or two. After that, try to include it at least once a week, or more often if your child requests it.
